Finding The Perfect Area Rug
How do you truly know when an area rug will enhance the appearance of your room?
What colors and shades will align with the decor of the space?
Should you opt for neutral tones or perhaps a more vibrant and colorful design?
Should you choose warm hues to create a cozy atmosphere or cool tones for a more calming effect?
If you would like to explore and find the answers to these questions, you will have the opportunity to learn all about them in this blog!
Step One - Select a Material
First, consider what type of room the rug will be in. For high-traffic areas like dining rooms, living rooms, kitchens, or entryways, the rug should be made of durable material such as wool or jute. Both of these fabrics are very durable but wool is naturally stain-resistant and very long-lasting which is best in an entryway or dining room. For a kitchen, or dining room, where it is easy to make a spill, you may want to consider machine-washable rugs. We carry various options that are machine washable, stain-resistant, and pet-safe. These rugs can also be used outdoors, making them perfect for a patio! Less durable rugs made from materials like viscose or polyester can be used in areas like bedrooms or offices where there is less traffic.
Step Two - Aligning Colors with Room
Consider whether you want the rug to feel more like a background to your room or a main character. If a room has simple furniture, adding a colorful or textured rug will help increase interest. If you want the rug to blend in and create a cohesive look, opt for a more neutral rug.
BOLD RUGS
If you choose a colorful rug, then try to align a couple of the colors in the rug with items in the room such as pillows or chairs. Below are some examples of how a bold rug can add to your room versus a subtle rug!
NEUTRAL RUGS
If you are aiming for a more neutral look in your room, consider selecting a rug that blends in with the color scheme and decor. To add depth and visual interest, look for rugs that have unique textures and gentle designs that won’t overpower the space. This will enhance the room’s ambiance and maintain a cohesive look.
WARM VS. COOL TONES
If you’re looking for a simple rug but want to add a touch of color to your space, you have the option of choosing a warm or cool toned rug. Warm-toned rugs typically feature shades of red, orange, or yellow, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere, while cool toned rugs often showcase shades of blue, green, or purple, offering a calming and serene vibe. The photos below will demonstrate the feeling that warm and cool tones give.

Step Three - Select the Size
When designing a room, the size of the rug can have a significant impact on how the entire space feels and functions. Too small of a rug can make the room seem cramped and too large of a rug can overwhelm the room. For the layout, furniture should always be at least partially overlapping the rug to create a balanced look. Another tip to find the perfect sized area rug for your space is that, when you measure, make sure that the rug will allow for around 18 - 24” of uncovered floor around the rugs. This will give the perfect balance of uncovered flooring to the rug.
Below are some helpful measurements for what tends to work best with various room layouts.
